HUATULCO ACTIVITIES
Arts and Crafts
Several places in Huatulco carry craftwork from other parts
of the state of Oaxaca, one of which is the Handicrafts Market
in the Plaza de la Bahía de Santa Cruz.
Beaches
The Bahías de Huatulco tourist complex consists of
nine bays and several beaches with golden sand and azure waters
surrounded by local vegetation along its entire length of
35 km. From north to south, the bays are San Agustín,
Chachacual, Cacaluta, El Maguey, El Organo, Santa Cruz, Chahué,
Tangolunda and Bahía de Conejos. One of the calmest,
most beautiful beaches is in Bahía de San Agustín,
a broad horseshoe of golden sand surrounded by beautiful rocky
headlands.
Cuisine
In La Crucecita, prices are affordable and there
are also a number of French restaurants. In Tangolunda, the
Casa Real, set in the Sheraton Hotel, offers Oaxacan and European
fare, while for Caribbean specialties, we suggest the Cavendish
restaurant bar in the Punta Tangolunda Mall. Make sure you
try the freshly-caught lobster prepared in a variety of original
ways.
In the beautiful kiosk of Santa Cruz, a few yards from
the captaincy of the port and in the shade of leafy trees,
Café Huatulco sells a type of coffee produced by
the local Coffee Producers’ Association known as Pluma,
because of the nearby famous coffee producing region of
Pluma Hidalgo.
Fishing
The coast of Huatulco is perfect for deep-sea fishing. In
Puerto Angel there are several places where you can hire all
you need for this fascinating sport.
Golf
The Tangolunda Golf Club, designed by F.M. Schjetnan, is one
of the best golf courses in Huatulco. It has 18 holes, par
72, with a course of 6,851 yards. The natural exuberance of
the surroundings, the trees, sandbanks, cactuses and small
lagoons, make it extraordinarily beautiful.
Historical Interests
Travel agencies provide information on tours of the coffee
plantations, where 4X4 vehicles take you up an altitude of
approximately 1,200 m above sea level. If you want to know
more about the growing, picking and processing of this aromatic
plant, the best time for visits is between November and March.
Coffee tasting included.
Night Life
Like all of Mexico’s major resorts, Bahías de
Huatulco has several places where you can have a drink or
a coffee or go dancing, such as the Magic Circus and Polson
discotheques.
Sailing
In the Bahía de Tangolunda, surrounded by major tourist
complexes, you can choose from a range of water sports including
sailing. Sailboat tours are available to the rocky island
of Montosa, inhabited by hundreds of birds.
Shopping
In La Crucecita and Tangolunda, shops such as Platería
Malti, La Placita and El Arte Mexicano carry objets d’art
and clothes. The best place for handicrafts is the Mercado
de Artesanías in the Plaza de la Bahía de Santa
Cruz.
Snorkel & Scuba
In Bahía de San Agustín, the mean temperature
of the sea ranges from 25 to 30°C depending on the depth
and the time of the year. If you’re looking for coral
reefs, this place is ideal, and equipment is also available
for hire. Another attractive place for diving and observing
octopuses, sea urchins and mollusks, apart from the ubiquitous
fish, is Isla Blanca, midway between Bahía de Chahué
and Bahía de Santa Cruz.
Surfing
The beautiful Santa Cruz and Tangolunda bays are perfect for
surfing.
Water Sports
Huatulco is ideal for snorkeling. A boat will take you to
the magnificent La Entrega Beach where you can observe the
countless marine species that inhabit the Pacific.
